The 3 Main Effects Drinking Coffee Can Have On Your Health ...

There are plenty of people who avoid drinking caffeinated coffee, believing it could lead to all sorts of negative health effects. The fact of the matter is that recent studies have shown that a moderate amount of coffee could actually benefit you by reducing your overall risk of some serious illnesses and diseases. Of course, there are people who happily drink plenty of coffee in an attempt to stay more alert, feel more energized and keep them going for longer. Despite this positive research there are indeed some negative effects to drinking excessive amounts. This article will look at some of the potential health effects drinking coffee could have on you.

Coffee has definitively been associated with increased risk of infertility in women as well as a risk of birth defects. Stillbirths have a higher chance of happening in women who consumed a fair amount of coffee throughout their gestation. Research also shows that the effects of drinking 2 or more cups of caffeinated coffee each day can double the risk of miscarriage during the early stages of pregnancy. Coffee drinking mothers can also find that their newborn babies have a lower than average birth weight. Switching to decaffeinated coffee may not offer a solution, as the chemicals present in the decaffeination process may still be present in trace amounts.

Coffee however can reduce the incidences of cirrhosis of the liver by quite a bit. These nodules typically stop liver functionality completely over time. Coffee has an anti-fibrotic quality that some people can benefit from. Liver cancer incidences are significantly decreased with the link in caffeine.

Losing weight can be more difficult with the consumption of caffeine. It has been shown that long term weight gain is assisted by the consumption of caffeine. You might think in the short term that you can lose more weight by drinking more coffee each day. The reason for this is that coffee has a bit of a diuretic effect that helps you lose fluid not fat. Your blood sugar levels can be affected (usually decreased) by the increased stress hormones in caffeine. The reality is that your appetite will increase making you feel hungry more often. You also aren't helping things by adding extra sugar to your coffee.

In conclusion, drinking a moderate amount of coffee isn't harmful. You must however remember that over indulging is a different story all together. Watch your caffeine intake. Research may have shown some benefits and promise but moderation is the only true way to avoid problems.

Yemen: Suspected US airstrike kills 12 militants

SANAA, Yemen (AP) ? Yemeni military officials say a suspected U.S. airstrike has killed at least 12 al-Qaida militants traveling in a military vehicle in the country's embattled south.

The officials say the vehicle, which was stolen from an army post in recent days, was parked when it was hit Wednesday south of the town of Lawder in Abyan province.

Residents said the vehicle took a direct hit, leaving it totally destroyed with bodies strewn nearby. They and the officials spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the subject.

The area has seen heavy fighting between government forces and militants in the past three days.

U.S. officials could not immediately be reached for comment. U.S. drones have targeted al-Qaida leaders in Yemen in the past.

THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP's earlier story is below.

SANAA, Yemen (AP) ? Yemeni government troops battled al-Qaida militants in heavy fighting Wednesday that left 31 people dead, raising the death toll from three days of clashes to at least 158, military officials said.

The fighting, which broke out Monday with an ambush on an army post, is centered in and around the town of Lawder in the country's nearly lawless south. Of those killed on Wednesday, 28 were al-Qaida militants and three were civilians fighting alongside the army, the officials said. Six civilians were also wounded.

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to the media.

The Defense Ministry said in a statement that the 28 militants killed Wednesday included two senior members of the terror network in the area. It identified them as Imad al-Manshaby and Ahmed Mohammed Taher.

In cities like Lawder, which is in Abyan province, residents have become fed up with the government's inability to protect them and, in a country where most adult males possess weapons, have taken up arms to protect themselves.

There are an estimated 300 mostly young men armed with assault rifles and rocket-propelled grenades who have joined the government side in the fight. But they are running low on ammunition and food supplies, according to one of their leaders, Jihad Hafeez. Many of the town's residents have left the city to escape the fighting, he said.

The fighting is the latest in a series of bloody confrontations between government forces and al-Qaida-linked militants, who have taken advantage of the turmoil caused by the popular uprising against longtime ruler Ali Abdullah Saleh to seize control of towns and swaths of territory in the south. Army troops are using rockets and artillery in the three-day battle.

Al-Qaida's branch in Yemen, known as al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula, is one of the movement's most dangerous offshoots.

Saleh, who left office in February as part of a U.S.-backed deal, was Washington's longtime partner in the fight against the terror network's branch in this impoverished Arab nation. But Saleh was frequently found to be unreliable, turning a blind eye to the growing strength of militant groups as part of an elaborate balancing act to maintain his grip on the fractured nation located in the southern part of the Arabian Peninsula.

Al-Qaida was once present in Lawder, but in July residents drove them out. The militants have since been trying to regain their foothold in the town, which has a population of about 30,000.

Lawder is strategically located along a major highway that links Abyan's provincial capital of Zinjibar, an al-Qaida stronghold, to the provinces of Hadramawt, Bayda and Shabwa, where the group also is active. The area is now a patchwork of government- and militant-controlled towns.

Yemen's popular uprising, which was inspired by Arab revolts elsewhere, succeeded in pushing Saleh from power. His successor and former deputy, Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi, was later rubber-stamped as president in a single-candidate nationwide vote that was part of the power transfer deal.

Washington hopes that Hadi can bolster the government's authority and make good on his pledges to fight al-Qaida. But in addition to his war with the militants, he also faces a challenge from Saleh loyalists and a crippled economy.
